Andy Warhol’s Cat Named Sam

23 Dec

This Andy Warhol illustration dates to the 1950s and relates to a larger book of lithographs he created titled 25 Cats Named Sam and One Blue Pussy. Warhol made the drawing while he was still working as a commercial illustrator, and it is a fascinating pre-cursor to his later Pop Art output. The artist’s passion for cats (he is rumored to have kept as many as twenty-five in his Manhattan apartment) is lovingly communicated through this expressive hand-colored feline.
